Court tennis, also known as field tennis, is a racket sport played on a rectangular court divided in half by a net. The object of the game is to hit the ball with the racket to make it bounce on the court on the opposite side, trying to prevent the opponent from being able to return the ball. The origin of court tennis dates back to the twelfth century in France, where a kind of racket game called "Jeu de Paume" (palm game). The game was played on grass courts and consisted of hitting a leather ball with the palm of the hand, without the use of rackets. Over time, the game evolved and started to be played with rackets. In 1873, the first grass tennis court was created in Birmingham, England, and the sport began to become popular. Court tennis is a very popular sport all over the world, especially the Grand Slams, which are the four major tennis tournaments in the world: the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
